DEMU train engine catches fire in MP’s Ratlam, no one hurt

Date:

On Sunday afternoon, a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train caught fire in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district, causing panic among passengers but thankfully resulting in no injuries. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM while the train was en route from Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (Mhow) to Ratlam, between Runija and Naugaon stations.

According to Western Railway public relations officer Khemraj Meena, the fire broke out while the train was packed with passengers due to the Diwali festive season. Upon noticing the flames and smoke, passengers panicked, leading to a stampede as many attempted to escape. Some individuals even jumped from the moving train, sustaining minor injuries.

The train driver responded promptly by halting the train as smoke began to billow from the engine. Emergency protocols were activated, and both the nearest station and the local fire department were alerted. Fire department personnel quickly arrived on the scene and successfully extinguished the blaze, averting a potentially more severe situation.

In a commendable display of community spirit, local farmers utilized their motor pumps and hoses to assist in controlling the flames before firefighters arrived, which helped prevent further damage. Railway officials confirmed that there was no loss of life or significant property damage, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Despite the chaotic circumstances, railway officials assured that the situation is under control and passengers are being safely transported to the nearest station. Some passengers chose to leave the train and walk along the tracks due to the crowded conditions on board during the busy festive season.

As investigations progress, authorities are working diligently to uncover the underlying reasons for this incident, aiming to enhance safety measures for future rail operations.
