In a major political move, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has nominated Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora as its candidate for the Worli assembly seat, setting the stage for a competitive showdown against Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray. Shinde emphasized the need for justice for Worli and its residents, promising to unveil their vision for the constituency soon.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde believes that justice for Worli and Worlikars is long overdue. Together, we’re paving the way forward and will share our vision soon. It’s Worli now!” Deora announced on X.com.

Deora, who recently transitioned from the Congress party after feeling sidelined, was initially eyed for the South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat but eventually opted for Worli. This constituency, which Thackeray secured in his electoral debut in 2019, is now gearing up for a triangular contest, with Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’s (MNS) Sandeep Deshpande also in the race.
Historically, Worli has experienced significant political changes. It was represented by Sachin Ahir of the Nationalist Congress Party from 1999 to 2014 before being won by Shiv Sena’s Sunil Shinde. Thackeray’s move to contest from Worli was strategically supported by the party, which facilitated Ahir’s entry into Shiv Sena to clear the way for him.
Thackeray garnered acclaim for his management of the Covid-19 crisis, particularly overseeing operations at the Worli Dome hospital. However, recent Lok Sabha election results indicated a drop in his winning margin, sparking discussions about a potential shift to the Sewree constituency, known for its strong Marathi demographic. Ultimately, he decided to remain in Worli.
In response to Deora’s candidacy, Ahir stated, “In democracy, everyone has the right to contest. Deora knows how strong we are, and we are ready for the challenge.” The contest has attracted further attention, with BJP leader Shaina NC expressing interest in entering the fray. MNS chief Raj Thackeray has already held two meetings to support his candidate.
Interestingly, none of the main contenders—Deora, Thackeray, or Deshpande—reside in Worli, with their homes located in areas such as Dadar, Bandra, and Pedder Road.
Beyond Worli, political negotiations are ongoing regarding the nearby Mahim constituency, where Raj Thackeray’s son Amit plans to make his electoral debut. MNS leaders are advocating for a smooth election process and have informally requested the withdrawal of Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Mahesh Sawant, while some within Shiv Sena are suggesting Deshpande withdraw to ease the path for the Thackeray cousins.
