Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the RJ Sankara Eye Hospital in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, a facility dedicated to providing comprehensive eye care. During the event, he toured an exhibition that showcased various aspects of the hospital.
In his address, Modi emphasized the spiritual significance of visiting Kashi during this auspicious time, highlighting the warmth of the local community, including saints and philanthropists. He celebrated the hospital’s establishment as a modern healthcare facility in the sacred land of Lord Shankar, expressing his congratulations to the residents of Kashi and Uttaranchal.

Modi likened the hospital to a beacon of light, stating it would “wipe out darkness” and serve the needs of both the young and elderly. He underscored that the hospital would offer free treatment to underprivileged patients, while also creating job opportunities for youth and internships for medical students.
Reflecting on his previous collaborations with the Sankara Eye Foundation as Chief Minister of Gujarat, Modi expressed pride in inaugurating this new facility. He acknowledged the contributions of the late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and commended his wife, Rekha, for continuing his philanthropic legacy. The Prime Minister noted that both Sankara and Chitrakoot Eye Hospitals had responded positively to his requests for healthcare facilities in Varanasi.
Modi remarked on Varanasi’s evolution into a healthcare hub for Uttar Pradesh and Purvanchal, citing improvements such as the BHU Trauma Center and various specialty hospitals established over the past decade. He contrasted the current healthcare landscape with the neglect of previous administrations, highlighting the increase in treatment centers and medical facilities in the region.
The Prime Minister outlined the five pillars of India’s healthcare strategy: preventive healthcare, timely diagnosis, affordable treatments, improved healthcare facilities, and the use of technology in healthcare services. He emphasized the importance of cleanliness, yoga, and nutrition in preventing illnesses, noting that health issues often lead to poverty.
He shared successes in vaccination coverage and early disease detection through the establishment of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, which have helped in identifying conditions like cancer and diabetes at early stages. Modi also spoke about the reduction in healthcare costs and the expansion of medical infrastructure in smaller cities.
In closing, the Prime Minister expressed his confidence in a healthy, capable young generation driving India towards a developed future. He extended his best wishes to doctors and healthcare staff for their ongoing contributions.
