A suburban train derailed at Kalyan station in Thane district, approximately 60 kilometers from Mumbai, on Friday evening while approaching a platform. The incident caused a disruption of train services across the route, lasting between 30 to 45 minutes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The derailment took place around 9 PM when the Titwala-CSMT train went off track at platform number 2, affecting the mainline services. Central Railway’s chief public relations officer, Swapnil Nila, confirmed that the rear coach derailed at a slow speed as the train was nearing a stop.
Following the incident, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Central Railway’s Mumbai division announced on X that mainline services were running behind schedule due to technical issues, expressing regret for the inconvenience. However, a subsequent message an hour later, detailing the derailment, received backlash from netizens who criticized the earlier communication as “misinformation.”
Kalyan station, being one of the busiest junctions on the Central Railway, experienced significant service disruptions.
In a related incident, earlier on Sunday, two coaches of an empty local train derailed while entering a car shed near Mumbai Central. This also impacted Western Railway operations, though no injuries were reported as the train was empty at the time. The derailment occurred around 12:10 PM, according to Vineet Abhishek, chief public relations officer of Western Railway.
Officials explained that the train had just left Mumbai Central and was heading toward the car shed when the last two coaches derailed, partially blocking the track used by slow trains heading to Virar and Borivali. Sources suggest that the derailment may have occurred at the point where two rail lines intersect, but the exact cause is yet to be officially confirmed.
