Congress Urges Centre to Clarify Stance on Canada, Warns of ‘Damaging Brand India’

Date:

The Congress party has expressed alarm over the allegations made by Canada regarding Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, stating that these claims are “tarnishing India’s global reputation and damaging Brand India.” In a post on X, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized the need for the Government of India to “articulate its stance” on these serious allegations.

Ramesh called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to keep the Leaders of Opposition in both Houses of Parliament informed about the significant charges made against India by both Canada and the USA. He highlighted the escalating tension in India-Canada relations and the potential implications for India-US ties.

Last week, Canada informed India that its diplomats were deemed “persons of interest” in the investigation into Nijjar’s murder, a charge that India has firmly rejected. Following this, India recalled its diplomats from Canada and expelled six Canadian diplomats from New Delhi.

Ramesh stated, “Allegations made by Canada, now supported by several other nations, threaten to escalate, further tarnishing India’s global reputation.” He underscored the importance of safeguarding India’s international standing, calling it a shared responsibility that requires the opposition to be fully informed.

He added, “Our nation’s international image as a country that believes in and adheres to the rule of law is at risk, making it crucial for us to unite in defense of it. On issues of national security and foreign policy, the nation must always present a united front.”

These remarks followed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s assertion that Canada had clear evidence of India violating its sovereignty. India, however, has dismissed these allegations, stating that Canada has yet to provide any substantiating evidence for its claims.
