In a bid to address concerns over food safety, the Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has announced plans to introduce an ordinance aimed at preventing spitting in food. A high-level meeting was convened on Tuesday evening with senior administrative officials from various departments, including Home, Food and Civil Supplies, and Law, to discuss the provisions of this ordinance.
The government plans to introduce two ordinances, tentatively titled the “Prevention of Pseudo and Anti-Harmony Activities and Prohibition of Spitting Ordinance 2024” and the “Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Contamination in Food (Consumer Right to Know) Ordinance 2024.” These ordinances will outline both preventive measures and punitive actions against those who violate the rules.

This decision follows previous mandates requiring food establishments to display the names and addresses of their owners and managers. CM Adityanath has taken a firm stance against food adulteration incidents, including reports of spitting or urine contamination in food items. He had previously issued directives for the mandatory display of operator details at eateries across the state to ensure accountability.
The proposed ordinances aim to create stringent provisions against those serving contaminated food, while also empowering consumers with comprehensive information about the food they consume, including preparation details and responsible personnel.
In addition, CM Adityanath recently held a ‘Janta Darbar’ at the Gorakhnath temple, where he listened to public grievances and directed officials to resolve issues promptly.
As Uttar Pradesh prepares for by-elections in ten Assembly seats—Phulpur, Khair, Ghaziabad, Majhwan, Mirapur, Milkypur, Karhal, Katehari, Kundarki, and Sisamau—the upcoming polls are critical for both the BJP and opposition parties. The Election Commission is expected to announce the election dates soon, and the BJP is eager to regain its momentum in the state.
