As Bengaluru faces an orange alert for heavy rainfall, the Karnataka government has recommended that IT-BT and private firms allow employees to work from home on Wednesday, October 16. The intense rains are expected to cause significant traffic congestion across the city, making commuting a challenging task.
In a letter addressed to IT and BT companies, the Karnataka Innovation and Technology Society emphasized the importance of prioritizing employee safety amid the ongoing heavy rains. The letter stated, “In light of the continuous and heavy rains in Bengaluru City and an orange alert issued by the Meteorological Department, we are prioritizing the safety and well-being of all employees working in IT, BT, and private companies located in Bengaluru.”

The government also highlighted the likelihood of flooding affecting transportation systems. “As transportation may be disrupted due to flooding, waterlogging, and traffic congestion, commuting to office premises could pose risks. As a precautionary measure, it is recommended that IT, BT, and private companies permit their employees to work from home on October 16, 2024,” the letter further noted.
Additionally, the Karnataka government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Bengaluru on the same day. Bengaluru Urban District Collector Jagadeesha issued the order on Tuesday evening, anticipating that rains will persist for several days.
The BBMP (Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike) has also urged residents to venture out only when necessary and to exercise caution. Manyata Tech Park, which houses numerous MNCs and IT firms, is currently experiencing severe flooding, complicating employee commutes. The BBMP is actively working to pump out water from the roads within the tech park. Meanwhile, the Hebbal flyover has already seen gridlock this morning, with thousands of vehicles trapped for hours.
