A 30-year-old Delhi Police constable, identified as Sandeep, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident while on duty in the Nangloi area of West Delhi early Sunday morning. Disguised as a civilian to prevent burglaries, Sandeep was struck by a reckless driver who then dragged his body along with his two-wheeler for over 10 meters.
Constable Sandeep, who joined the police force in 2018 and was stationed at the Nangloi police station, is survived by his mother, wife, and a five-year-old son. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Jimmy Chiram reported that Sandeep was heading towards the railway road when he noticed a WagonR being driven erratically.
“During his duty hours, Constable Sandeep attempted to alert the driver to slow down, but the vehicle sped up and collided with him from behind,” the DCP explained. Following the impact, the car dragged him approximately 10 meters before crashing into another parked vehicle.
CCTV footage showed Sandeep signaling for the WagonR to reduce speed just before it accelerated and struck his bike. The constable sustained critical injuries, including severe head trauma. He was initially taken to Sonia Hospital and later transferred to Balaji Hospital in Paschim Vihar, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The police have registered a case under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the occupants of the offending vehicle, who are currently on the run. Raids are underway to apprehend them. The DCP expressed the department’s grief, stating, “Delhi Police is saddened by the loss of a family member in such tragic circumstances.”
