In a significant announcement, BCCI’s outgoing secretary Jay Shah revealed exciting changes as anticipation builds for the retention rules ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. Starting in 2025, players will earn a match fee of Rs 7.5 lakh for each game. To further reward consistency and hard work, players participating in all matches during a season will receive an additional Rs 1.05 crore on top of their contracted amounts. Each franchise will be allocated Rs 12.60 crore for match fees throughout the season, marking a substantial incentive for players.
“In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers! A player participating in all league matches in a season will earn Rs. 1.05 crores in addition to their contracted amount. Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crores as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the IPL and our players!” Jay Shah tweeted.
As the IPL, often referred to as the ‘cash-rich league,’ evolves, this initiative aims to enhance player engagement. It addresses the issue of many international stars leaving the tournament midway due to other commitments. The new incentive scheme will also greatly benefit young players, who, even if contracted at a base price of Rs 20 lakh, could earn over a crore if they participate in every game.
Earlier this year, the BCCI introduced a similar incentive for Test cricketers, offering Rs 45 lakh for those playing at least 75% of scheduled matches in a season. This means a player participating in 10 Tests could potentially earn an additional Rs 4.5 crore, alongside their standard match fee of Rs 1.5 crore (Rs 15 lakh per game).
These initiatives highlight the BCCI’s commitment to prioritizing both Test cricket and the IPL, ensuring that players are well-compensated for their dedication to the sport. With these new measures, the IPL is set to enter an exciting new chapter, further enriching the experience for players and fans alike.
