Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ faces strict censorship, Cleared for release after 13 changes

Date:

Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’ has been in the spotlight following the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) revising committee’s clearance after several delays, though with specific modifications.

In ‘Emergency,’ the Mandi MP portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, a role she also directed and co-produced. The CBFC granted the film a U/A certification, requiring the filmmakers to implement 13 changes. These modifications include cuts, insertions, and other alterations to scenes deemed objectionable by Sikh groups. On Thursday, the Certification Board informed the Bombay High Court that its revising committee recommended these cuts prior to the film’s release.

The committee outlined 13 modifications, including six insertions and four excisions. The Bombay High Court, presided over by Justices B.P. Colabawalla and Firdosh P. Pooniwalla, scheduled a hearing on the matter for Monday, September 30.

Meanwhile, the lawyer representing co-producer Zee Entertainment requested additional time to determine whether to proceed with the suggested modifications. The request included the removal of the words ‘Sant’ and ‘Bhindranwale’ from a dialogue between two political leaders, the deletion of phrases praising Bhindranwale, and the removal of certain visuals and dialogues targeting non-Sikhs.

Justifying the grant of a UA certificate, the Certification Board stated that the film includes “scenes depicting political violence and unrest, along with mild references to atrocities against women,” indicating it is suitable for viewing under parental guidance.
