BJP MP Kangana Ranaut retracted her recent statements advocating for the reinstatement of the three farm laws that were repealed in 2021. On September 25, 2024, she clarified that her views were personal and did not reflect the official stance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
During the Monsoon session of Parliament on July 30, Ranaut expressed her belief that the farm laws should be brought back, suggesting that their repeal was only opposed in a few states. She emphasized the importance of farmers as “a pillar of strength” in India’s progress and argued that reinstating the laws would enhance financial stability for farmers and benefit the agricultural sector.
However, her comments sparked controversy, prompting backlash from within her party and political opponents. The Himachal Pradesh BJP distanced itself from her remarks, and the Congress party accused the ruling government of potentially trying to reintroduce the laws.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ranaut stated, “My views on Farmers Laws are personal and they don’t represent the party’s stand on those Bills.” In a subsequent video, she acknowledged her dual role as an artist and BJP member, expressing regret for any disappointment her comments may have caused. “I take my words back,” she stated.
Ranaut’s remarks come ahead of the Haryana assembly elections on October 5, a state that was significantly impacted by farmer protests against the controversial laws. This isn’t the first time her comments have led to controversy; last month, she faced criticism for disparaging remarks regarding the farmers’ protests, which the BJP quickly condemned.
The party has since instructed Ranaut to refrain from making statements regarding party policy in the future, emphasizing the need for alignment with official positions.
