Gujarat: AAP MLA and 20 Others Charged for Allegedly Assaulting Restaurant Owner Over Bill Dispute

Date:

An FIR has been filed against Aam Aadmi Party MLA Chaitar Vasava, along with six identified individuals and approximately 15 unidentified accomplices, following an incident in Gujarat’s Narmada district. According to information the group is accused of assaulting Shantilal Vasava, a restaurant owner, over a bill dispute.

The police report details that the incident occurred on the night of September 16 when Shantilal Vasava requested payment for the meal. This request allegedly angered the MLA, who then told the complainant to meet him at his home. Upon arrival, Chaitar Vasava and a group of about 20 individuals reportedly verbally abused and physically assaulted Shantilal, even issuing death threats.

The charges against Vasava and his associates include rioting, unlawful assembly, causing injury, intentional insult, criminal intimidation, and conspiracy, under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). As of now, no arrests have been made.

Chaitar Vasava, who was elected from the Dediapada constituency in the 2022 Gujarat elections, also ran for the Bharuch seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections as part of a seat-sharing agreement with Congress, but was unsuccessful. This is not the first legal trouble for the MLA; in December of last year, he was arrested for allegedly threatening a forest official, firing shots in the air, and extorting money. He was later granted bail after spending nearly six weeks in jail.
