Kanpur: In the early hours of Saturday, the Ahmedabad-bound Sabarmati Express (19168) derailed near Govindpuri station in Kanpur, raising concerns of foul play and possible involvement of anti-social elements. The incident, which occurred at around 2:35 a.m., resulted in the derailment of 22 coaches. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Suspected Sabotage: Investigation Launched

According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the engine of the Sabarmati Express, traveling from Varanasi to Ahmedabad, struck an object placed on the track, leading to the derailment. “Sharp hit marks are observed,” the minister noted, indicating potential foul play. He further added that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Uttar Pradesh Police are actively investigating the incident, with secured evidence pointing towards deliberate sabotage.

On-Site Observations: Foreign Object Found

Railway Board officials are also probing the possibility of foul play, particularly after discovering a foreign object near the 16th coach of the train. An official stated, “Looking at the size of the damaged portion of the engine’s cattle guard, it appears that the engine hit this foreign object and derailed.” The loco pilot reported significant damage to the cattle guard after striking what is believed to be a boulder.

Notably, just over an hour before the incident, a Patna-Indore train had safely crossed the same track at 1:20 a.m., further raising suspicions about the timing of the derailment.

Passenger Reactions: A Night of Panic

Passengers aboard the Sabarmati Express described a harrowing experience. Vikas, a passenger traveling from Varanasi to Ahmedabad, recalled the terrifying moment in a video shared by PTI: “Shortly after we left Kanpur railway station, we heard a loud noise, and the coach started shaking. I was very scared, but the train stopped.”

Vikas mentioned that the train was moving at a slow speed when it derailed, which may have prevented a more severe outcome. Following the incident, passengers exited their coaches and waited by the tracks for assistance.

Authorities on High Alert

As investigations continue, authorities are on high alert to determine the exact cause of the derailment and prevent any future occurrences. The incident has also highlighted the need for increased security measures along critical railway routes.
