Lucknow: Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow experienced a scare on Saturday after radioactive material was detected in the cargo area. The airport was swiftly evacuated, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was deployed to handle the situation.
According to a statement from the airport authorities, an alarm for radioactive material was triggered while scanning a medical consignment. The incident did not impact airport operations, and there were no reports of injury or threat to life.
The alarm was activated by a box containing cancer medicine, which led to immediate action from security personnel. “The situation is completely under control,” said a spokesperson for the Adani Group, which manages the airport. “The alarm was triggered by the radioactive material in the medical consignment. The substance was packed in a wooden box, which caused the alarm to go off. Once the alarm was raised, security teams were activated, and NDRF teams were called in.”
The spokesperson confirmed that Terminal 3 was evacuated and handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and NDRF for safety checks. The alert caused a temporary panic among passengers, but airport operations continued without disruption.
In a related incident last week, police in Bihar’s Gopalganj recovered 50 grams of the radioactive substance californium, worth crores, and arrested three individuals involved in its trafficking.
Californium is used in nuclear reactors, coal power plants, cancer treatment, and oil drilling. The recent airport scare has underscored the importance of rigorous safety measures for handling radioactive materials.
