Kolkata: Chandra Kumar Bose, the grandnephew of the iconic freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, has formally requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repatriate Netaji’s mortal remains from the Renkoji Temple in Japan to India. This appeal comes on the eve of August 18, marking the death anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

In his letter to the Prime Minister, Bose emphasized the profound impact of Netaji’s legacy. “Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s life has become legendary,” he stated. “His charisma, intellectual brilliance, extraordinary bravery, and unwavering commitment to India’s freedom have immortalized him as a hero not only in India but among freedom-loving people worldwide.”

Bose addressed lingering doubts surrounding Netaji’s death, which occurred in an air crash while leaving Taiwan in August 1945. The crash happened amidst the aftermath of Japan’s surrender, and many speculate that Netaji might have intended to continue his struggle in the Soviet Union. Bose recounted that close family members, including Netaji’s brother Sarat Chandra Bose and his widow Emilie, never received confirmation of his death beyond August 18, 1945.

Highlighting historical skepticism, Bose noted, “Given Netaji’s remarkable ability to evade British capture and his perilous voyages during wartime, many question whether he truly died in the described circumstances.” He referenced a 1956 inquiry led by General Shah Nawaz Khan and the Khosla Commission Report of 1974, both of which supported the account of Netaji’s death. The 2005 Mukherjee Commission, which questioned these findings, was criticized for fundamental errors and rejected by the Indian government.

Bose urged the current government to declassify files related to Netaji and make a final statement to dispel false narratives. “It is imperative that the Government of India, under your leadership, brings clarity to Netaji’s legacy. The repatriation of his remains to India, the land he fought to liberate, would be a fitting tribute to this immortal hero,” he concluded.
