Expanded and New Categories in NIRF 2024

In addition to the established categories, the 2024 rankings introduce new sections, including state public universities, with the top 50 ranked and an additional 50 in the rank band of 51-100. Notably, the open universities and skill universities categories feature only three ranked institutions. The innovation institutions category includes 10 ranked institutions, with another 40 falling into the 11-50 rank band.

Disciplines such as Architecture & Planning, Law, Medical, Dental, Research Institutions, and Agriculture & Allied Sectors now feature 40 to 50 ranked institutions each, reflecting the growing emphasis on these fields in India.

Enhanced Accuracy and Data Integrity

The NIRF Team has employed triangulation methods to enhance the accuracy of the rankings, consulting with institutions to identify and correct any data discrepancies. This meticulous approach has significantly reduced data inflation, allowing for the refinement of ranking parameters and metrics. Third-party sources such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Derwent Innovation have provided additional data on publications, citations, and patents, ensuring transparency and reliability.

Ranking Parameters

The NIRF Rankings are based on five key parameters:

  • Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TLR)
  • Research and Professional Practice (RP)
  • Graduation Outcome (GO)
  • Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)
  • Perception (PR)

Publicly funded institutions, including CFTIs and centrally funded universities, continue to dominate the top ranks across most categories. However, state and privately funded institutions have also made a strong showing, featuring prominently within the top 100 across various domains.
